If you think that productivity of your organization, especially manufacturing, declined after you have acquired one of ISO quality standards, you should consider checking followings;
§ First you should make list of how many incidents in manufacturing you had before standardization and after it. You must state your evaluations fairly, then, maybe you will notice the good impact of the implementation of the quality system.
§ Check how many hours there are available for your production, not counting the time spent for repair, maintenance and down- time procedures. For example, some companies report total available time for manufacturing is 16 hours because there are 2 shifts per day. However, it is obvious that not all the time is spent for production since of course there will be waste in time for maintenance procedures. This means that there maybe other reasons for the decrease in productivity.
§ If your organization has 8 hour shift, you should check the productivity of your worker during the day taking into account how many hours he/she has spent only just for work. Try not to take into account the heat up time at the beginning of the day and at the end of work time. Also, the productivity of worker differs according to the beginning, middle and end of the week.
§ You should fairly reconcile the causes of the non-productivity and the ISO quality implementation results. Sometimes, failures in productions may be interpreted in wrong way by blaming the quality procedures.
§ If one of your workers claims that the productivity dropped after the certification and he can claim that relation. Remind him that there can be coincidence and that there are many things that may result in low productivity.
§ Main objective of the ISO is to improve the productivity in long term time, so the implementation time can be long and for short time it can reduce productivity. However, for the all the quality procedures are can be tolerated till the results of certification are visible.
§ According to Deming, the measurements of productivity are antithetical to the entire concept of quality system management.
In brief, before making any judgments on productivity and ISO standards, think about the causes of the non-productivity and make fair conclusions.
